@thatautisticelf: Self-suspecting autism is so valid!♥️ For the self-diagnosed: The difference between stating "I gave autism" and "I suspect I have autism" when you are undiagnosed is so important, especially online! If you do not have the confirmation that you have this disability, then there is a chance you will be spreading misinformation, due to the amount of symptom-overlap between autism spectrum disorder and many other mental disorders, such as obsessive compulsive disorder, social anxiety disorder, borderline personality disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Though you may believe you have autism, you may have one of these other disorders, or two, or more; clinical psychologists are trained for years to distinguish between them. Mental disorders are incredibly complex, and if you do not have the proper training, then you will likely get this wrong. And no, you are not the one exception. Self-suspicion isn't just about being smarter, but also more respectfu to the autistic community. Higher support needs folk are harmed by misinformation the most, as they struggle the most with the "undesirable" symptoms that self-diagnosed folk always leave out. If you feel invalidated unless you can claim the label, that's an incredibly minor issue compared to the ableism and violence perpetuated against higher support needs folk. Your struggle is not having a label; theirs is abuse, neglect and even death due to the misinformation people like you are spreading. #actuallyautistic #autismawareness #neurodivergent #autism

I can't agree. Self-diagnosis saved my life. I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for it

This! I'm really sorry bc I understand not everyone has the priviledge to get an official diagnosis, but some of us has to understand that a diagnosis is based on different tests as well as the observations of traits. I have OCD's traits Borderline trais, schizoid and schizotypal traits. BUT if you read my diagnosis, those traits are not enough to indicate personality disorders. And I can assure you, in my life I autodiagnosed myself schizophrenia and borderline because observing the traits I fitted in many of those traits. And my autodiagnosis were, indeed, wrong. So YES you can "guess" your diagnosis right, BUT not every time is right

agreed. there's so many possible mental illnesses that even psychiatrists, after ~7yrs of studies struggle to diagnose. like do they think that a random 13yo on the internet can self diagnose ? 😭😭 thinking "i might have that.." is ok but saying "i have it" is just selfish and makes us taken less seriously

Not only is this based in relation to autism but this concept also applies to every neurodevelopmental disorder and/or mental illness too and people don’t realize that. Self suspicion is valid, self diagnosis is not.

ive been harrassed for saying self diagnosis aint valid. “We know ourselves best!” If you know yourself best, you do not immediately need a label because you will know what aid and support you need whilst atleast TRYING to get a valid diagnosis by PROFESSIONALS? If you suspect something, say suspect. Dont claim to have something you might be wrong of.

there is so much harm self diagnosing in the sense of if you get assessed and get told you're not, it'll destroy you cause you convinced yourself otherwise without considering it could be something else

I honestly think that a lot of people who self-suspect mislabel it as self diagnosis or are wrongfully accused of doing so. Not all of them but many. I see a lot of people suspecting they may have autism, clearly using phrases like “i think” or “im pretty sure” or “i was told i dont, but im getting a second opinion” and people will berate them for self diagnosing, wishing they had autism, or not being satisfied when they are evaluated and told they dont have it (by only one person, i say this bc a lot of people end up seeing 2-3 people, often 1 or 2 before they seek out someone with a much better reputation for diagnosis less “severe” autism or autism in women specifically). In reality i think the people who truly self diagnose are much better at hiding it bc they outright claim to be autistic with no implication that its just a guess unless you pry further which feels rude to do.

Watching medical professionals weigh between diagnosing my sister with OCD or ASD was eye opening to see that if they need to take care to analyse and evaluate presentations of behaviour, then the average person can only ever suspect.

I refuse to claim access to the community without formal diagnosis but I meet the diagnostic criteria and have multiple commonly comorbid diagnoses, an autistic husband and an autistic child

Funny how we are fine with self-diagnosis with other things. No one tells me that “don’t know if Im allergic to cats unless an allergist tested me for it and told me I had a cat allergy”. Sometimes things are self-evident.

and not everyone with a diagnosis is privileged!! I am on disability pension and will likely never live an independent life, and I'm only support needs level 2.

nobody can objectively assess themselves. they could think they have autism but actually have BPD. they could think that have BPD and actually have bipolar. they could think they have ADHD but they are actually completely normal. let the professionals assess and diagnose. if you have specific struggles in specific areas you can address and learn to manage your own personal challenges. it doesn't always request a diagnosis.
