Everyone keeps saying “your nervous system needs to feel safe.” But I think this is what the internet is missing when we talk about safety: Something can feel unsafe without actually being unsafe. Because change often doesn’t feel safe. Doing something unfamiliar can feel terrifying. Setting a boundary can feel wrong. Speaking up can make your heart race. Trying something new can make every part of you want to retreat back to what you know. But we cannot always use how something feels as evidence of whether it is actually dangerous. Your brain loves familiar. And familiar is not always the same thing as safe. Sometimes the biggest changes in our lives come from doing the thing that terrifies us and giving our brain a new experience: I did it. I was uncomfortable. I was scared. And I was okay. That is new information. Of course, this does not mean putting yourself in situations that are truly harmful or dangerous. Actual danger is very different from the discomfort and activation that can come with doing something new. But if we treat every uncomfortable feeling as evidence that something is unsafe, we can end up reinforcing the very patterns we are trying to change. Your nervous system learns through experience. Sometimes learning safety means doing something that doesn’t feel safe yet and giving your brain the opportunity to discover that uncomfortable does not automatically mean dangerous. You don’t necessarily have to feel safe to learn safety. #regulated #regulatednervoussystem #nervoussystemhealing #changeyourperspective
