343 Firefighters Ran Up While Everyone Else Ran Down | September 11, 2001 New York City, September 11, 2001. When the first plane struck the North Tower, thousands of office workers began evacuating down the stairwells toward the street. FDNY firefighters, arriving within minutes, went the other direction. Carrying up to 45 kilograms of gear each — hoses, axes, oxygen tanks — they climbed floor after floor of the burning towers, passing evacuating civilians who would later describe the same detail again and again: the firefighters were calm, they said good morning, they told people to keep moving, that everything was going to be fine. Survivors recall making eye contact with men climbing steadily toward a fire scene the firefighters themselves could see was unlike anything the department had faced before. Off-duty firefighters heard the news on their day off and drove straight to the scene. Retired members put their old gear back on. Entire companies went up together and did not come back down. When the towers collapsed, 343 members of the FDNY were killed — the largest single-day loss of life for any emergency responder department in American history. Among the dead was the department's chaplain, killed while administering last rites to a fallen colleague. In the weeks and months that followed, the department attended funerals and memorials almost daily. The 343 names are read aloud publicly every September 11th. Many of the thousands of civilians who passed those firefighters on the stairs went home to their families that night because someone chose to keep walking up. I was there on those stairs, and I remember exactly which direction they were going. #NeverForget #FDNY #September11 #343 #ameliathroughtime
