Climbing up Everest isn't the hardest part. Most people who die on Everest do so climbing down. I fought back a lot of emotion on the summit. I knew that the job was only half done and the most dangerous part was yet to come. We started by first descending the summit ridge. A knife-edge exposed on both sides. But other teams were still ascending, so to move past other climbers I would often have to unclip from the rope. Falling while unclipped to the rope meant a 3,000m drop into Tibet on one side or a 2,500m drop into Nepal on the other. Neither ideal! Then we later descended the Lhotse Face. A 1000m wall of blue ice and snow with an average slope of 45 degrees. You descend relying on a strong grip and the friction of your gloves on the rope to keep you steady. By the time I'd descended fully my brand new leather gloves were shredded from the rope burn. This video captures me walking through the Valley of Silence. A quiet moment after much of the risk of Everest was behind me. But not entirely.
