Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about how the ocean feels maternal. Not just beautiful or powerful, but deeply familiar. Like something in us remembers it. Maybe that’s why so many people feel healed near water. Before we ever took our first breath, we existed in fluid. Our first home was water. In so many ways, the ocean, like a mother, gave us life. I once read that the word “mer” comes from the Old English for sea, and in French, mer means sea while mère means mother. That connection stayed with me. The sea really does feel like a great mother sometimes: nurturing, grounding, life-giving, but also wild, mysterious, and powerful beyond our control. Earth is mother too. We don’t live on her, we live with her. Every forest, tide, reef, and mangrove reminds us that we are part of nature, not separate from it. The way of water has no beginning and no end. It connects everything: life to death, darkness to light, one generation to another. The sea gives and the sea takes, yet somehow still holds all of us in its heart.
