@offenceregister: Rúben Semedo The Case: The Portuguese defender, playing for Olympiacos at the time, was arrested by Greek authorities in Athens in August 2021 following an allegation of gang rape reported by a 17-year-old child. Legal Outcome: Semedo denied the allegations and was released on bail pending further judicial proceedings in the Greek legal system. The Misdemeanor Council of Athens subsequently exonerated him of the charges after finding no supporting evidence. Summary & Case Details: Rúben Semedo is a Portuguese central defender who played for clubs including Sporting CP, Villarreal, and Olympiacos. Known for his physical presence on the pitch, his career has frequently been overshadowed by significant off-field legal issues, including past convictions in Spain regarding firearms and property offences. In August 2021, while playing for Olympiacos, Semedo was arrested by Greek police in Athens after a 17-year-old child reported that she had been taken to his residence and subjected to a gang rape. Semedo denied the claims, stating the encounter was consensual. He was held in custody before being granted conditional bail upon paying a financial bond. The case underwent investigation by Greek judicial authorities, involving medical examinations, digital forensics, and witness statements. Following the review, the Misdemeanor Council of Athens cleared Semedo of the gang rape charges, determining that the collected evidence did not support the allegations. While he was exonerated of this specific incident, the repeated legal entanglements severely disrupted his sporting career, leading to loan departures and short-term spells across several European and Middle Eastern clubs.
