I thought this was a really interesting point to make, so checked it out on Chat GBT. Apparently Leviticus is part of the holiness laws given to ancient Israel around three thousand years ago. These laws governed a specific covenant community rather than all humanity. The daughter of a priest was held to a uniquely high standard because priests represented God’s holiness before the people. Her actions were viewed as bringing dishonour not only on her family but also on the priesthood itself. That doesn’t necessarily make the punishment feel just by modern standards, but it helps explain why the offence was treated differently from prostitution generally. Interestingly, there are no recorded biblical examples of a priest’s daughter ever being burned under this law.

Also, although in the Old Testament, God’s holiness and justice are strongly emphasised. In the New Testament, Christians believe God’s character is most fully revealed in Jesus Christ. When Jesus encounters a woman caught in adultery (John 8), he does not deny that adultery is sinful, but neither does he condemn her to death. Instead he says: “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.”
