@monstrofarm: One thing I’ve learned over the years is that repotting doesn’t always mean starting over. A lot of people assume you should remove all of the old potting mix and completely loosen the roots every time you move a plant into a larger pot. But if the root system is healthy, I usually do the opposite. Those roots have already established an environment they’re growing well in. Instead of tearing everything apart, my goal is to preserve as much of that healthy root ball as possible while simply giving the plant more room to continue growing. Most of the time, I’ll only loosen a few roots at the very bottom if they’re beginning to circle the pot. Then I’ll backfill with fresh potting mix, water everything in, and let the plant keep doing what it was already doing successfully. Of course, if I’m dealing with root rot, severely compacted soil, or another root problem, that’s a completely different situation. But when the roots are healthy, I believe less is often more. How do you handle repotting? Do you leave the root ball mostly intact, or do you remove all of the old soil? #plants #houseplants #plantcare

if its some random soil on a new plant i always replace it completely. if you have dense soil around the roots and a well draining soil around the edges theyre going to drain water at different rates which usually leaves a soggy middle and creates root rot in my experience. if its my own soil mix (which is super chunky, its probably more inorganic drainage than soil) i just throw it in a new pot and backfill.

Totally agree. I do the same. Loosen the soil and roots and add more soil. It set backs the plant and even kills it

I only remove old soil if I'm switching the mix entirely or when I initially purchase a plant. Not risking root rot and bugs. Immediate fresh start!

i get that you can do it maybe twice but depending in the plants condition sometimes it is better to remove the old soil especially if it downgraded on quality or is infested

The only time you’ll ever see me disturb the roots (especially of a Pothos) is if I have concerns of root rot. They like being snug and they hate being disturbed lol

Idk friend, even chunky mixes get compacted and eventually cause root rot. In the wild it’s harder for that to happen, but if it does they can spread out enough to let that area of root die without affecting the plant. If those roots die while contained in a pot, it can affect the whole plant
