I always buy a ticket because I know the one time I don’t will be the only time I see a inspector… usually they are just standing around by the barriers watching people jump the gates

Went from Manchester to Newcastle once, £120 ticket. I said screw it jumped on the train hoped for the best, I knew Newcastle had barriers, ticket inspected never came paid a fiver from the station before Newcastle to get through barriers

idk if its an option abroad,but in romania you can very much go inside the train,pick your seat,w/o ticket and if the inspector shows up,you can buy a ticket on the spot,and i think thats sm better than wasting money
