@askpaindoc: One of the most common things I hear from patients with chronic pain is “people don’t understand”. Not because others don’t experience pain, but because they assume it’s the same thing. A sore back after a long day, sleeping in the wrong position, or overdoing it at the gym can absolutely hurt. But chronic pain is different. It doesn’t disappear after a good night’s sleep or a weekend of rest. It follows you to work, follows you home, and follows you to bed. It changes the decisions you make, the activities you avoid, and sometimes even the person you feel like you’ve become. The next time someone says, “My back hurts too,” remember they may be trying to relate. But sometimes the most meaningful response isn’t comparing experiences, it’s simply listening. Have you ever had someone compare their temporary pain to your chronic pain? #ChronicPain #InvisibleIllness #Spoonie #patientadvocate #ChronicIllness

Pain is the dictator of what I can complete in a day, not my actual desire to stop.

I have chronic pain and I take zero pain medication 🤷🏽‍♀️I do a lot of physical activities like walking, stretching, yoga, ECT.. People are way too comfortable with pain medication.

THIS! This is why we stop talking to people. I am so tired of someone at work asking if I’m ok then telling me those exact words, “my back hurts to.” UGHH!

OMG! Yes! They just don't get it. When you learn to live with constant pain it is so different than the pain here and there you can get or an injury that can heal.

And most people and telling us, trying to relate. They’re clearly telling us to just get over it already while we’re actively trying to find some sort of solution so we can function

I get what you are saying, but is the same time I don’t wanna invalidate my husband’s pain that he has working a full-time blue-collar job just because I have chronic pain he can be in pain. Also we just have different levels of pain. Mine never leaves. He understands that, but I’m not gonna say his doesn’t matter because it’s not chronic.

Super tired of it. What really grinds my gears too is when someone older than me says "you're too young to complain about pain" or "wait till you're my age"....

Yes, my mother does this with me. She tells me “just wait until you get my age”. She has no clue what inflammatory arthritis feels like.

This!! Say it louder for those in the back. I have to keep doing life no matter what my Pain says. I have to get out of bed. I have to get dressed go to appointments do laundry cook myself food. I don’t have to take care of a family because I’m by myself thankfully, but I can no longer work because of other health issues on top of the pain. But no, I can’t just sit around or stay in bed.

One key point to understand about chronic pain is the unremitting nature of it. Anyone can understand pain that happens, but chronic pain never stops. It may be that one area or another flares up, but there is, for me at least, the constant, never-stopping, always-present pain. Imagine a painfully loud, throbbing, sharp, nagging pain that never stops. You learn to sleep or eat or work during that noise, but it's never not horrible. It's the ceaseless, incessant, perpetual pain that makes it chronic.

I’ve tried to get people to understand that after 7 back surgeries, a 2 level fusion with rods and screws, 11 plates and 64 screws in my ribs and shoulder, my pain scale is not the same as most folks. My 5-6 would be most peoples 10, crying in the floor of the ER. Not throwing shade at anyone, but once you constantly hurt every hour of every day, your tolerance increases. If you know, unfortunately you know.

How do I know if my everyday pain is chronic though? I mean I’ve used a cane since 2024. Do I need a diagnosis to have chronic pain? It’s chronic and it’s pain. Doctors tell me to lose weight or go on birth control to fix it. Nothing is fixing it.

So true!!! But… I ended I hospital for two weeks because the pain I was experiencing wasn’t my everyday chronic pain! It was a very serious kidney condition that mimicked my Behcet’s Disease! The ER doctor actually asked me “why couldn’t you feel the pain when you peed?” I looked at him and said “have a look down there and you’ll see why I couldn’t tell!” Good lord!

I've been in chronic pain for 20 years now. We learn how to mask, how to hide our pain, and to just take some Tylenol and suck it up. The reason why is, there is a stigma against chronically ill/ pain patients. In medicine and in every day encounters. I've been gaslit by so many providers, I was told my pain is in my head and I need to see a psych. Women are more likely to be afflicted with autoimmune disorders and chronic pain, therefore, we are called 'hysterical' instead of actually ill. This is why other people compare their pain to chronic pain, they are taught by society that being disabled is a moral failing and people who suffer from chronic pain are seekers or 'complainers'.
