Warner Bros. picked July 21 for Barbie years earlier, Universal locked Oppenheimer into the same date not long after, and neither studio blinked. What should've been a scheduling disaster turned into the biggest shared moviegoing event of the decade. Pink outfits at 10am screenings, black ties for the 1pm, people bragging about which order they watched them in like it actually mattered. Barbie closed at $1.4 billion and finished as the highest grossing film of 2023. Oppenheimer hit $975 million and briefly held the record for highest grossing biopic ever, before Michael quietly took that crown earlier this year. Still sits at number two all time, which for a three hour R rated film about nuclear physics is genuinely insane. Nothing since has come close to that specific kind of chaos. Feels less like a coincidence now and more like the last time the whole internet agreed on something at the same time.
