Cardinal Richelieu at the Siege of La Rochelle Henri-Paul Motte 1881 This monumental history painting depicts Cardinal Richelieu during the Siege of La Rochelle, one of the most decisive episodes in seventeenth-century French history. La Rochelle was the principal stronghold of the French Huguenots, the Protestant minority whose political and military independence challenged the authority of the Crown. Determined to strengthen royal power and unify France, Cardinal Richelieu directed the siege that lasted from 1627 to 1628. Rather than relying solely on military assault, Richelieu ordered the construction of a massive seawall across the harbor, cutting the city off from English support and supplies. After months of starvation and resistance, La Rochelle surrendered, marking a major victory for the French monarchy. Henri-Paul Motte portrays Richelieu not as a churchman removed from worldly affairs, but as a commanding political figure at the center of a nation-defining struggle. Clad in scarlet robes amid soldiers and fortifications, he embodies the union of religious authority, political ambition, and state power that shaped early modern France. #HenriPaulMotte #CardinalRichelieu #FrenchHistory #ArtHistory #HistoricalPainting
