She stayed in regular touch with her children, even the ones who had moved away. She shared her house with her youngest son, John Kamau, 22. John had been staying with her and was battling drug addiction. Around early May 2026, Mary stopped answering her phone. Her children called for days with no answer — for four days. They got worried and asked neighbours to check the house. The door was locked. When they got in, Mary was on her bed, dead and already decomposing. She had been stabbed multiple times — twice in the chest and once in the forehead. The murder had happened days earlier. The case was reported at Lanet Police Station around May 16, 2026. Bahati North Sub-County Police Commander Charity Karimi and her team named John Kamau the prime suspect. He lived with her and disappeared right after the killing. No one saw him in the village again. Less than two weeks later, on May 30, 2026, people in Nakuru’s Free Area spotted him. A mob grabbed him before police got there. They dragged him back to his mother’s compound in the N-Nganga area, Kiamunyeki sublocation. In the same place where Mary was found dead, the crowd beat John to death. He had a severe head injury. The mob tried to burn his body and blocked DCI officers from doing their work at the scene. One murder became two in the same compound. Police found a hostile crowd when they arrived. John’s body was in the compound. The mob action destroyed any proper forensic investigation. No full crime scene work, no proper collection of evidence from the house or weapon. Officers worked with neighbour statements, family accounts, phone records showing when Mary went silent, and the post-mortem that confirmed the stab wounds. No clear motive was ever stated publicly. But John’s drug problems, the fact he lived there, and his quick disappearance made him the obvious suspect. He never faced court. The public killed him first. Mary was buried in the community soon after. Family and locals came to mourn her. The second killing in the same compound left many questions open: exactly what happened in the house, if anyone else was involved, what drove the attack. The mob closed off answers a proper investigation could have given. This was meant to be normal days in a rural village. A mother in her house, a son with his issues. It ended with stab wounds, a rotting body behind a locked door, and another killing by beating and fire in the same compound.
