It’s so easy to focus on the moments our kids don’t listen. “How many times do I have to tell you?” “That’s three times now.” “I know you can hear me.” And before we know it, that becomes the story: 👉 They never listen. But here’s the part we often miss… What happened before that moment? The other day, our daughter moved through her entire morning routine without a single pushback. Teeth brushed. Ate breakfast. Got dressed. Everything done. I didn’t say a word. Then right at the end, she wasn’t putting her shoes on and that’s the moment I reacted. And it hit me: She did so many things right. I noticed the one thing she didn’t. And this matters more than it seems. Because attention shapes behaviour. When most of our attention lands on the moments they’re not listening…those are the moments that grow. Not because you’re doing anything wrong. But because that’s how learning works. And we’ve seen this not just at home, but working in schools too. The strategy teachers come back to again and again isn’t more correction…it’s positive reinforcement. Because when you consistently notice and respond to what’s going right, you get more of it. So now, I try to slow it down. Before I correct, I pause. And I ask myself: 👉 What did they do right that I didn’t acknowledge? Because there’s usually a lot. And when we start noticing that…something shifts. You get more cooperation. More connection. And less of that constant feeling of being ignored. If it feels like everything is turning into a battle right now…this is a really good place to start. 💜 Check out the link in our bio for our free guide: What to Say Instead of Yelling #parenting #parentingtips #positiveparenting #consciousparenting #emotionalregulation
