On 1st Jan 2025 I rescued a wild horse foal. A brumby. Five hours old. As she shivered alone in the creek (for the second time that morning) I knew if I didn’t get her out of the ice cold water she’d die. The balance between wild life and human intervention is so fragile and one I approach with deep intuition always. Her young parents came to me, her Mum rubbed her head against mine, they moved around me distressed and helpless. Then they watched as I picked her up, placenta still on her little body and gave her back to them. She stayed by my side a little too long, which cracked my heart into a million pieces. I didn’t want to leave her but I knew I had to get out of the water and walk away, allowing them to rebond. When I dared to turn back she was nursing. We stayed with them for two hours after. Her Mum and Dad checking on her constantly as she slept. The herd forming a ring of love and protection. She was barely visible in the grass, she was so tiny. It was nerve racking as I wasn’t sure she’d survive, but she finally woke, and they headed up to the mountain and I let them go. 🤍 I was asked to name her. I called her Morning Star. ⭐️ I believe she’s still doing well. I know this has been a tough year for so many already. May this bring you hope and resilience.
