Considering there are a lot of avoidant people who will never ask for help…sometimes you need to offer because they will never ask, and not for not wanting.

I would never ask for help. I want people to just want to help.

???? If my friend is feeling down I will bring them flowers or cook for them. That’s not control that is quite literally support. They didn’t ask, I’m doing it cuz I love them and that’s friendship???????

so a lot of people are missing the point. you can offer help, you can offer advice. if someone doesn't want it but you persist. that's control. if they listen but choose differently, and you push it, that's control. this isn't the same thing as someone not understanding. if you are pushing someone who is informed and has made a choice to not heed your advice and YOU cannot accept that. that is control.

not at all true.. think of someone in a mental health crisis like addiction. Sometimes it takes the people you love stepping in to redirect you.

I’d get a new therapist bc asking for help is one of the hardest things hyper-independent people can do. So they need to feel loved by those people who are willing to help them without being asked and it’s only control when your reasoning for helping was to make you feel good about yourself or bc you wanted praise and not bc you saw your loved one struggling and you wanted to ease their load.

No, it's not control, it's seeing someone who needs help and stepping in to make the burden lighter. I have a family of people who need help and refuse to ask for it so we literally have to step in and help. Just make sure you help in a way they would do it.

Yet aren’t we told that people with suicidal thoughts rarely seek help and that we should check in and support those who might be vulnerable. I hate this take. It’s just another example of today’s society in which nothing is ever right.

I feel like she either did not say that or you are leaving out so much context that you missed the real message

umm,, that's not true at all. as a shy person i have extreme difficulty asking for help so if someone offers help on their own it's a god send.

I think the take is to not just insert yourself into helping them and trying to solve their problems. It’s to actually ask them, can I help you in anyway? Or is there anything you need from me rn? whether just to vent. Sometimes thats all someone needs. Just an ear.

I think it depends on the person/context because sometimes I just want someone to notice and care.

That therapist need help oui...
Alot of ppl don't ask for help in fear of getting rejected. If they need help and you help without expectations something back, that's great.

A lot of elderly and disabled people experience this because other adults get frustrated with their “slowness” but they don’t need it done for them, they just need more time.

No one’s therapist would say this. It doesn’t even make sense. A lot of people want help that don’t ask for it and sometimes helping people without them asking is more than ok. Learn discernment.
