Among the first Nigerian women writers to gain international literary recognition, Buchi Emecheta authored several of the most widely studied works in modern African literature, including Second-Class Citizen (1974), The Bride Price (1976), The Slave Girl (1977), The Joys of Motherhood (1979), Destination B!afra (1982), The R@p-£ of Shavi (1983) and Kehinde (1994). . In this television interview, Buchi Emecheta discusses the expectations placed on African women, including her belief that women should not be forced to choose between education, marriage and raising a family. . Drawing on ideas explored throughout much of her writing, she explains that education and family life can exist alongside one another rather than as competing aspirations. She also reflects on the role of marriage, the importance of family, and the opportunities she believed education could create for African women. . While many of her novels centred on the experiences of African women, they also explored themes of identity, migration, family, tradition, c0l0nialism and social change. Today, her books remain among the most widely studied works in modern African literature. . . . . #BuchiEmecheta #AfricanLiterature #AfricanHistory #NigerianHistory #WomensEducation
