@newemergingking: While teaching consent to our young men, I received this question in the comments: “Should family members ask children before giving them a hug?” I wanted to answer it because I think it’s an important conversation.
This!!! I had a very creepy uncle and my parents always made me hug him he would “flip my girdle” which means he pinched my bottom. AS A CHILD! I knew it was wrong as a child!!

absolutely true! children need to be able to say no. My abuser was my grandfather 😬. My children were taught they never had to hug or kiss anyone is they didn't want to.

If I reach for a BABY and the baby hesitates or turn their shoulder I laugh and move on. We should NEVER be forcing physical touch with children.

Consent is learned. And so important. I had very angry family members but totally worth it.

My abuser was my father. Break the silence. Break the cycle. Teach children consent.

Thank you for highlighting the abuse element. Kids should know that it’s okay to say no to adults.

Yes, ask for a hug. If the child says no, say something like, "OK, how about high 5?
You'll be teaching them three things...Ask before touching, how to respond to no, and that its ok to say no

yup, my husband won't even let his own grand kids sit on his lap. he figures he teaches them not to do it with others so he needs to exemplify it. Definitely different than my grandparents.

thank you for sharing this information because so many people don't and my mama never made me hug or give nobody a kiss on the cheek if I didn't want to.

I say hi to kids a lot because I work in hospitality, when they don't speak back the parents force them to. I remind them "No, it's fine, they already must know about stranger danger"

We can definitely teach manners around greeting people and saying goodbye without telling them they have to hug another person. If I had a child I wouldn’t be ok with them ignoring loved ones, but I’d give them the option to say hello, wave, high five, fist bump, or some other form of acknowledgment if they’re not comfortable with a hug. This is such an important topic

All the ways you’re teaching your boys about how to engage respectfully and genuinely with others also means that they’re learning how to identify when someone isn’t treating them well and it just makes me so 🥰🥰🥰🥰 all the safe babies.

I was never made to hug people as a kid, so as an adult, I make it a point to ask a child if it’s ok to hug/kiss/touch them and I don’t feel bad if they say no. They’re allowed to say no
