G-SIBs would hold/custody XRP primarily for client-driven services and liquidity, not as a core neutral settlement layer.
Why G-SIBs Would Hold XRP
With the CLARITY Act opening the door for regulated custody of ISO 20022-compliant digital assets, major banks could offer:
• Institutional custody and safekeeping — Clients (corporates, funds, payment firms) want to hold XRP in a compliant, insured bank environment rather than self-custody or unregulated wallets.
• Liquidity provision for cross-border payments — XRP’s on-demand liquidity (ODL) model remains useful for fast, low-cost corridors, especially in emerging markets or where correspondent banking is expensive. Banks can facilitate this for clients without taking large proprietary positions.
• Bridging and treasury services — For stablecoin on/off-ramps, multi-currency settlement, or routing through XRPL when it’s the most efficient path.
• Product development — Structured products, ETFs, or tokenized asset platforms that reference or use XRP.
The Bigger Context
BIS/Agorá is building the wholesale backbone anchored in central bank reserves. XRP isn’t required for that — but regulated banks can still use it where it adds value for clients. Ripple’s path to a national trust bank (and potential Fed master account) makes this more attractive because it brings everything under federal oversight, reducing risk for G-SIBs.
In short: Client demand + regulatory clarity + proven utility in specific flows = why G-SIBs would custody/hold XRP. Not because it replaces central bank settlement.
