This is my first year out of the classroom. I’m an assistant principal now but in addition to a why should we study history lesson, I paired it with a historical quote activity where students analyzed the quotes about history from historical figures (including Hitler) and based on the quote they summarized why history is important!

I like to do gallery walks after the students get comfortable with each other. Otherwise, at least the high school students I have taught, are completely frozen with anxiety.

I’m thinking about doing something similar but with movie plots. Essentially giving them the beginning and end of a story and asking them to fill in the gap. Then periodically giving them more plot points. The point is to show them that history is like a story, if you just know a bunch of random facts or “plot points” it doesn’t really make sense. You have to understand the cause and effect of the story to understand the impact of the story.

Yeah, I can’t even imagine this..my principal was dealing with two stabbings, a fight in the boys bathroom and a food fight at lunch on my first day…I wish I worked at such a nice school.

I like this lesson. Our district just rolled out developmental designs district wide last year, and a class-wide debate on day 1 would be severely reprimanded using DD. Basic intro level 1 Qs only on day 1 is the expectation. I disagree, but they want us to help students develop comfortability in the classroom before expecting full participation. Apparently we are dealing with a new generation of students who needs insane scaffolding for how to speak to one another face to face 😵💫

I've done this the last 2 years for my 5th grade US history class and it's worked out great! I think it works so well because in my state 5th grade is really the first year where students have a separate class for history (usually it's just lumped in with RLA or like 30 minutes a week) so they really don't understand why it's a new class and this activity showcases the value of the course in a very easy to understand way.
