@theoutwordsarchive: Lee Marquardt is a lesbian activist who bloomed a little later in life. When Lee’s son came out as gay, it gave her the courage to do the same. Shortly after, she moved to a new city, got involved with the local PFLAG chapter, and basically rebooted her life. Thanks, Lee, for reminding us that it’s never too late to embrace who you are. #ComingOut #LGBTQElders #LGBTQSeniors #PFLAG #LateBloomer

Heartbreaking. Why do we make it so hard for people to just be who they are?

I’m a 70 year old gay man. Being gay in the 60’s70’s was very lonely. Our stories are similar. So glad kids today don’t have to hide as we did. Thank you

This hits really close to home, when I told my grandmother I was gay she broke down crying, I thought I ruined everything by telling her, then she finally spoke and told me she was too, and that she'd been lying to everyone including herself for 60 years, she never remarried after my grandfather died because she would rather be alone than continue the lie but she could give her truth voice, she passed away about month later, and I'm the only one she ever told, it's never too late to accept and live your truth

It’s heartbreaking that her “life as a gay person started” when her son came out to her. So much of her life was stolen from her because of the vitriol and hate she knew would be hers if she came out.

When I finally came out to my parents at 38, we did not speak for 3 years. My mom especially did not know how to handle it, did not understand because I was married, had 2 kids…but eventually she came around. I of course divorced, and re-married to a guy (when it became legal) and when my mom got to know my spouse they became very close and talked on phone on regular basis. It all worked out for me fortunately…don’t give up , give parents time to cope and understand.
