The group had been trying to contact a classmate’s late boyfriend when a teacher interrupted and broke the board. In the months that followed, Estefanía’s health declined under circumstances that could not be clearly explained, and after her passing, her family began reporting unusual activity inside their home. The events that would lead police to open what became known as El Expediente Vallecas. If the story sounds familiar, that’s because it inspired the 2017 Netflix film Verónica, which drew loosely from the original case. More than thirty years later, The Vallecas Files, a new three-episode documentary on HBOMax, revisits the story through those who lived it.
