Didn’t work for me recently in Shanghai. A local told me that I need a Chinese mobile number to make it work, ie a Chinese SIM card. I only had an eSIM in my iPhone

I saw that the base unit itself also sometimes has a charge cable in case your phone completely died so that you can give it a little juice, enough to turn it on and rent a pack so convenient
