I think the blue French horn in the show represents Ted’s desperate attempts to I force destiny and “win” a romance while the umbrella represents surrendering to fate and letting love happen naturally, I got the same yellow umbrella as a reminder

so many people don't realize it actually is good writing to have such a sad, devastating irony. for him to chase the love of his life and be the most romantic person in the world just for her to get sick. and to have that parallel her story of already having the love of her life die young as well. the bad part about it is him going back to robin, especially because the writers didn't plan barney and robin from the beginning and probably didn't expect it to be way better than Ted and robin
