@tobi.eulerrolle: Places where old souls belong in Vienna: Vienna is a city where emperors still rest beneath churches, old halls keep their secrets, and cafés remember generations of writers and artists. Beneath a modest Capuchin church lies what I can only call the graveyard of emperors: ten vaults, 150 lives from the Habsburg dynasty, and four centuries of power, devotion and private grief sealed inside metal sarcophagi. In the end, even an empire is reduced to a name engraved in stone. At the Palace of Justice, a staircase rises through a glass-roofed hall towards Justitia, seated above it with a gilded sword and a book of law. The palace was completed in 1881 and burned during the violence of July 1927; the restored marble feels different once you know what it has witnessed. Inside the Rathaus, Vienna turned civic life into something almost cathedral-like: a neo-Gothic city hall built between 1872 and 1883, filled with pointed arches, grand staircases and ceremonial rooms. The University of Vienna is older still. Founded in 1365, its Ringstraße building gathers students around an arcaded courtyard conceived not only as its architectural centre, but as its spiritual one — watched over by generations of scholars carved in stone. Across the Ring, the Parliament borrows the language of Greek antiquity. Its architect chose ancient forms to recall the origins of democracy, while Pallas Athena still stands outside, guarding a building where history continues to be written.
