@missclairebenjamin: Handling the pay rise that never happens…. When you’ve been promised a pay rise and it seems like you’re constantly being fobbed off it can lead to feelings of resentment. Understandable especially if you’ve taken on more responsibilities. Wanting to assert yourself in this situation is the right thing to do but assertiveness and reactivity are not the same thing. Acting from emotion and reactivity like we see in this first part of the clip is unlikely to help the situation, if anything it could cause lead to resistance in your manager at a time you need them to be advocating for you. This is a time when strong influencing skills are needed. The second part of the video shows an example of being assertive and influencing the situation. This is far more likely to lead to a positive response and the outcome you desire. 💬 Have you ever been on either side of this? Share your perspective in the comments 📌 Please remember the advice offered in this video is generalised and will not fit every situation. Oh boy I’m in this situation right now. Remit doubled last September, have actively stepped up, have no resource supporting me due to budget, and after having a few conversations about role title - still waiting, still giving it my all with nothing in return

The second version said exactly the same as the first one. I would have said that after 6 months of doing free labour I‘d disengage with these additional responsibilities until they had a chance to figure out their processes. 😌 I would never accept a fake promotion anyways, title change or not.

I think the first approach is good. Why stay working under a boss that doesn’t support you? Especially if this isn’t the first conversation and it’s been months. That’s unprofessional on the boss’s side.

There wouldn’t b a long conversation. If the company doesn’t recognise my worth to them or the job I’m doing, I’m out

Take it to HR. If they don’t respond, take it to ACAS.

No, absolutely not. sometimes you have to realise your value and give an ultimatum. no "when do you think you'll have a timeline". "i want a timeline within 2 weeks or i will be turning in my 2 weeks." getting fobbed off for 6 months is ridiculous

say all of this in an email with a more tighter timeline and copy in their boss or HR

Being nice doesn’t get you nowhere when you’re working in a place that does not respect you. The first example was perfectly fine.

If any employee ever says to me they may reevaluate if they are staying or not.. I always say, thank you for feedback, I’m always happy for you to keep your options open. - then in my book.. RED flag employee! Move them on.

Would love to see how you would handle my current predicament, my JD has been amended and my workload and responsibilities have more than doubled. I asked for a review and salary review (4+ years since my last pay review), I’ve been told no pay rise but my new JD still stands…

I've always had to get another job offer first. I think it doesn't matter how you communicate to them that if they don't raise yourself, you're gonna look for another job, from that moment on they're gonna be looking to get rid of you. That's how it works in the United States anyway.

Then when you hand your notice in, the pay rise magically gets confirmed.

I'm in that situation but I will be getting something in my pay at the end of this month apparently although not seen anything in writing. How do I handle a boss who knows I have ADHD tell me I need to manage my time better but then undermines my decisions, wastes 25 minutes of my time asking my opinion and playing psychological mind games to the point where I end up saying if you are going to pull rank, just tell in the first instance and save us both the time.

I have tried the second approach and it’s been pushed aside as though it’s not a priority. Unfortunately, the first approach appears to be more effective. It’s quite sad how you have to express your disappointment for the right action to be taken
