We videotaped numerous times it happened and took the videos and documented things that happened before and after them to our appointments it helped a lot.

Hey bestie, as a late diagnosed AuDHD girly (and BCBA) I’ve had staring spells my whole life - my eyes get huge and I can still communicate but my eyes get “stuck” on something 😳 I was evaluated as a kiddo for seizures but they didn’t find anything - everyone is different but I figured I’d share anyways 😘 you’re doing incredible as always, mama

Both my children had staring spells all EEGs came back normal. My daughter is doing them again more recently she is about to be 5, taking her to neurologist. But honestly I think it’s a sensory thing. I am diagnosed AuDHD and I stare as well and sometimes I do it longer because it feels good lol idk. Always better to be safe than sorry! Hoping your little girl is ok🤍

If you're not already film the episodes as much as possible. That can often help diagnose. Also be prepared for a 24hr EEG so they can have a better chance of catching an episode.

#1: thank you for sharing the video of her getting the eeg done. I like to think it helped showing my son right before he got his. My son has also had “staring spells” and eye rolling. But his doctors office doesn’t seem concerned. He’s 5, autistic, and only semi verbal.

We just did a 72 hour eeg. It was rough. Ask to do it inpatient if they decide to go that route. We did it out patient and I would not recommend it

Maybe they can do a 24 hour EEG where it’s like a walking portable one and usually done at home like a home sleep study. Granted she has to like not rip it off but it can help catch the activity better. I’d also personally advise against a FND diagnosis depending on what state you’re in because it can very negatively impact treatment especially when they’re also autistic. FND in women tends to get treated as “everything is in your head stop acting like that”

As someone who had absent seizures as a kid, just be the person to comfort her when she needs it. It means more than you know. Also if it ends up being a seizure, it’s recommended you still talk to them and reassure them when it’s happening (sometimes they can still hear) so I would recommend that as well❤️

There’s also autistic zone out. It can look very similar to a seizure, but it’s more of a disassociation. I used to do it all the time as a kid. Regardless, I hope you find answers!

My mom fought with the doctors till I was in fifth grade then they finally had me do a 24hr EEG and found that I have absent seizures and not only that but was having so many I was losing at least 10 mins each day due to them

Look into Petit mal seizures! I had them when I was younger and it grew into adulthood. Strictly when I’m under a lot of stress. Once I figured out my stressors, I haven’t had one since 2022!

Ask your neurologist about functional seizures or FND functional neurological disorder my partner has these staring spells and then he forgets what’s going on and it’s a kind of seizure that doesn’t actually have any electrical issues in the brains, but it’s not damaging the brain. There’s no medication but education on it may help.

I know this may be a silly question and you probably have done this already but have you tried videoing these staring spells to be able to show the doctor as they may be able to give you more answers if they can see what happens during them

Can you describe her staring spells more? My brain goes to absent seizures, FND, or dissociation but that’s just purely based off staring spells but I’d need to know more

Not advice, but we went through very much the same thing when my younger son was 11 or 12. He had always had staring spells where he wouldn't respond to his name or snap out of it if you tried to interact with him, but around this time, he also started having laughing/crying spells where he would go rapidly from one to the other, and both seemed uncontrolled and unrelated to anything that was actually happening. He doesn't have much verbal speech, so that made it hard to figure out what might be going on.
