That hat now rests in the captains cabin with unopened bottle of rum next to it. It’s the most pristine part of the cabin. No dust collects on it and no one on the crew dares touch it or suggest the captain remove the hat.

that night the first mate went to check on the captain in his quarters and noticed 3 cases worth of empty rum bottles, the captain looking out at sea and crying, mumbling how he promised to keep him safe and ashamed he failed, then the first mate says umm captian we found the people who took out (pirate name here), captain stands and says then let's honor him and take them out

I feel like the captain in situations like this has a wall in his cabin with hats hanging from the wall, with the names of their owners carved into little pieces of wood, nailed above each hat to honor the lost souls who've fallen, and to any DND players who enjoy this little idea might I suggest, that the captain in a life or death situation has the souls of his crewmen who've died appear to save his life

oooooh hear me out. the surviving crew members are all sharing stories late that night. at some point they start talking about how helpful that new crew member was, then about how amazing their final battle was. somewhere in that, they start jokingly making up more stories about the crew member. about how they saved other crew mates from going overboard, fist faught another ships captain & won. each story gets more & more absurd. the crew comes to a silent agreement. they keep telling stories about that crew mate over the years. the stories spread to other crews. some are aware of the real story but uphold the legend out of respect. others fear this crew. some nights, when the crew is gathered together telling stories, some swear they saw an extra crew member standing across from them, listening but never fully there
