Idk if this is relevant, but I had to stop taking my birth control bc my doctor who KNEW abt my dairy/lactose allergy didn't tell me there's lactose in most contraceptives. I got put in hospital after taking it for too long bc I had a severe reaction, he's still refusing to put me on anything else 🤷

not to take away from the point of the video, but I actually heard it was because the Catholic church didn't like birth control, so they added the placebo pills to appease them. both stories are fucked and I honestly don't know which one is true

That’s really not it girl it’s because for some people if you don’t have your period for a few months your body will just have it randomly and it can last way longer and be way worse it’s literally to regulate your hormones 😭

Talk to your gyno about it because some people that bleed a lot (me) can have breakthrough bleeding if you don't let yourself bleed once or twice a year. I went 9 months and then bled for a month and a half straight 😭

UNLESS YOU HAVE ENDOMETRIOSIS!!!!! If you have endo and are using BC pills to control the bleeding, you will STILL have a real period, because you have excess lining!!!!!!

I haven’t taken placebo pills in years. I told my PCP that when I have a period I risk divorcing my husband and running away to another country because I truly become demonic. She told me she’d write a script so that I get more active pills lol.

While i agree that this is a really frustrating detail about the deployment of life changing medication, the version of the story you are telling simplifies it into a story of personal sexism it at the expense of a much more interesting story about systematic sexism in how medicine as a field defined what was medically normal, and how John Rock, one of the researchers, tried to design the oral contraceptive such that it could fit within catholic doctrine, hoping that would allow the church to permit it (which it shamefully still does not!). It also hides the contributions of other men and women to the development of the pill and that there was a very real medical reason for the week off: early doses of the medication were much higher and the week off was incorporated in part to give women a break from the difficult side effects of the early pill. that they can be taken continuously now is also a result of advances in how we understand the hormonal treatments. if you would like to know more, there is a good interview in Vice UK from January 2019 called “The Truth About the ‘Pope Rule’ and the Seven Day Contraceptive Pill Gap” The history section of the wikipedia page on the pill is quite good and can be source mined for more details. i hope this is interesting!
