You’re compacting the soil doing that. It’s driving hole, not punching them out. A core aerator does what you’re describing. Your driving holes, smashing the soil down. In a sandy, loam-based substrate that will work. In clay, it will amplify the compaction. Gotta be a core aerator in clay soil otherwise it’s fueling the issue, not relieving it.
