Christopher Nolan could NEVER write Devi Vishwakumar

He writes women the way he views his wife. A devoted and loyal supporter of his male artistic vision. Indispensable to making it happen, but lacking depth, and complexity.

what you’re describing is benevolent sexism. women as “sacred symbols,” locked into roles or as objects to be “revered/admired” but not their own people.

one of the best criticisms i’ve heard is "his genius ends when a woman appears on screen"

I mean his wife is the producer for all this shit it’s kinda reflective of marriages… she has to execute his vision, doesn’t get as much credit, and he gets all the glory. It’s like women giving birth, raising the kid, and we give them the father’s name.

I would love to see his take on a women centric story. To see if he can actually present women respectfully and actually empowering.

it's fairly easy to determine, do any of his female characters pass the bechdel test or not?

The thing that makes it even more obvious is that Murph was initially written to be a boy. So the most complex female character he wrote….was actually still for a man.

Yeah, in every sci-fi movie where there’s a brilliant woman scientist it’s because her dad was one 😒

They have no idea who he is and what he did for his wife.. they speak from a place of ignorance Nolan is literally the reason his wife got in to the film industry

it makes it feel more problematic that he gave zendaya and Anne "perfect" remarks while filming, like he also expects so little of women in general.

I don’t think he’s ever had a movie where the women are the main characters, they are always side characters.

he doesn't let women have full personhood or humanity, outside of their relation to men. the women are reduced to support characters. the men are his true loves lol

How much it must suck for Zendaya ro be cast as Athena only for her to be tasked with shaking her head with disappointment at Oddyseus' suffering and very littke else.

When I rewatched Inception I realized that elliot page's caracther is so bad written that we don't know ANYTHING about her. She's just there. No history, motivation, conectivos... nothing!! not even a personality

props. They’re props! He might consider women essential to his artistic project the same way he may consider guns or explosions essential to a modern war film 👌

i’m excited to see the odyssey but this is definitely why nolan’s films strike me as hollow :/ it’s very “man discovers empathy, ooh let’s clap”

I was trying to think why it felt like Zendaya’s performance was so lackluster in Odyssey…then I realized her performance was great. Athena was just a nothing burger compared to the male counterparts.

Theresa F Kennedy :
Women are expected to write strong & powerful men but men aren’t expected to be able to do the same of women, probably because we are all so steeped in patriarchy that we don’t even recognize when women are relegated to this kind of one-dimensional role. It’s oddly misogynistic and Christian conservative in its approach - women are so special, so beautiful, that they must be put up on this pedestal and therefore are incapable of things like cruelty or selfishness or complexity. It’s absolutely infantilizing.

Every film class I’ve sat in I was *known* for pointing out the sexism in every single piece of “important” films to our culture. I’m so sick of pretending the greats are fantastic at everything, when they don’t show women as people. Pointing out the issues with Nolan, Kubrick, Hitchcock, and *many* other directors is such an important thing to talk about when we analyze film, and the amount of film bros I’ve had tell me how wrong I am drives me up a fucking wall.
