About four years ago, if you had asked me whether I was “fast” as a preteen or teenager, I would’ve said yes without hesitation. But now, at 26, after therapy, seeing a psychiatrist, and finally getting the help I needed, I see things very differently.
I wasn’t “fast.” I was a child who was taken advantage of at different points in my life, and those experiences shaped how I viewed love, attention, and relationships. They led me to mirror behaviors that had been normalized for me growing up. Yes, as a teenager, I talked to older men and made decisions I now know weren’t healthy. But I was still a child, searching for love, validation, and acceptance in the only ways I understood at the time.
When certain behaviors are modeled for you early in life, it’s difficult to recognize that they’re unhealthy. Looking back now, I have compassion for the younger version of myself. She wasn’t “fast” she was trying to meet emotional needs with the tools and understanding she had at the time.
