@neidateresa98: A lot has been made about the casting Christopher Nolan’s #theodyssey with many people complaining about the lack of Greek actors in the film. While I understand those complaints, I found myself troubled by the loudest grievances, ones against th casting of Lupita Nyongo’o as Helen of Troy. While it’s true that there were no “⚫️ people” in Ancient Greece, it’s not for the reasons you think. This is the first of the lazy girls guide to history series, lemme know what you think in the comments ✨Products used✨ @Rem Beauty Sweetner concealer in tan 8p @e.l.f. Helen of Troy was born from an egg. She could have been a swan

To me Lupita was an obvious choice. Helen needs to be someone who is recognized as universally beautiful, everywhere, by every culture right now. Nolan wanted to translate a feeling

This is brilliant, it’s honestly just bizzare that people think black people just popped up, as you said, during the civil rights movement

It also makes sense to me that Helen of Troy, the most beautiful woman anyone's ever seen, would be so striking because she didn't look like every other woman in Greece?

Seems fitting that the Helen of Troy casting would start such a culture war 😂

I mean…the Odyssey isn’t real. It’s not a history. It’s a fantasy epic. Cast whoever the heck you want. But also, this was so informative, thank you!

I understand that beauty is subjective. But seriously, anyone who says that Lupita isn't beautiful are just objectively wrong and racist. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Helen of Troy was supposed to be incredibly beautiful. Lupita fits the bill.

The ‘white armed’ thing seems to me close to how British people would describe aristocrats as having ‘blue blood’.

My issue isn't with any group of people being represented. It's about cultural context. The Odyssey comes from ancient Greek culture, mythology, and history, and those elements are part of what make the work what it is. Appreciating diversity shouldn't mean pretending that every culture's stories are interchangeable or that their origins don't matter...

Bronze Age Greece had contact with Northern Africa. This connection shows up in Greek art, and Greek epics, which is how we have historical records of their connection. Please keep in mind that prior to the Italian Renaissance, art was used to keep historical records and was considered to be a craft like a blacksmith. Back to the original topic, Ethiopia is mentioned in the epic the Iliad, which is directly linked to the Odyssey. So it isn’t out of the realm of possibility for Helen of Troy to have African lineage.

Let’s not forget that Troy; was located in what is Modern day Turkey. So Paris would’ve been Turkish….but Helen wasn’t of Troy - she was of Sparta. Which is even further south in Greece. So potentially still of having a darker skin anyway.

Fun fact about the “aethopians”/“ethiopians” referred to here are actually the Nubians/Ancient Kushites who lived south of Egypt in modern day Sudan. The Nubian Warrior Queen or “Kandaka” Amanirenas (anglicized as Candace) is also mentioned in the Bible and defeated the Romans in battle in their expansion south of Egypt.

this is a very informative and fair take. as someone who is greek, i would have loved to see a greek story cast with greek actors. but, that is not the route nolan chose to go, and not everything needs to be culturally specific. with this route, i think lupita was a phenomenal choice. who could be more fitting for helen of troy than a woman who’s very casting started wars itself?
