Sweet peas are amazing! Hardy down to -5 Celsius, it’s possible to sow them in the autumn in some climates. We’re in the South West of the UK (zone 8) and they overwinter very well here. An earlier sowing gives earlier flowers (around May here) and makes for stronger plants. The idea is to get them started now so they can form good root systems - we don’t want them to have a lot of top growth. We are overwintering our sweet peas in the greenhouse, but they will also do very well in a cold frame or porch - somewhere sheltered but not too warm. It’s very easy to sow sweet peas: 🌱 Fill a pot with compost - make sure the compost is good quality as the plants will be living here for 5-6 months! 🌱 Make a hole with your finger around 1cm deep 🌱 Pop a seed in and cover with compost 🌱 Water 🌱 Leave to germinate in a sheltered (but not too warm) spot 🌱 Plant out in the spring, around April or as soon as the worst of the frosts are over (they can handle some frost) We put 3 seeds in 1 pot with some rich homemade compost mixed with grit. We’ve sown 4 sweet peas for 2024: Cupani, Lord Nelson, Jilly and Albutt Blue #sweetpeas #selfsufficient #gyo #growyourown #growyourownfood #homestead #smallholding #garden #lovegardening #kitchengarden #veggarden #plants #igrewthis #ediblegarden #gardendesign
