@thatboyonfire4: The issues I had the first time around are still present but so luck of this film worked for me the second time around if you struggled with some aspects of highly recommend giving it a second watch #odyssey #theodyssey #whattowatch #christophernolan #filmtok
The scene where the innocent woman, in the form of Athena, gets beheaded is the absolute peak of the film. It beautifully symbolises both his guilt but also his broken faith since he broke Zeus law.

Maniacal mojo :
i found that this movie cemented how nolan is incapable of handling more then a single theme in his movies amd never with any nuance, to spite him making a lot of genera based movies he hates genera based movies. Wanting to seem like he is a serious film maker but ultimately appearing more as a coward instead as with most his decisions in odysseus. it reminds me of the barbieheimer event where oppenheimer was portrayed as a serious movie with serious themes and barbie the fun popcorn movie, with the barbie movie being the movie with deeper more applicable nuanced themes on multiple issies that was better cast, shot, edited and directed. Nolans odyssey was a movie that i found to be humorous because of how much of a mockery it was. The ending monologue about the violation of hospitality changing the era and its poetic equivalance to modern day society is fun, not that unique, not very well done in the context of the movie and also attached to 2 hours of film that did not deserve that. two minutes of a good expositiory explanation of the themes does not a good movie make.

Rewatch was huge for the intentions of the movie. First go is just too much to take in.

Where Oppenheimer left me with a feeling of dread, The Odyssey left with a kernel of hope. Like we had an active role in what would happen going forward, better or worse.

as someone who studies classics i was very focused on the plot the first time around (and so gave the movie 2.5 if im being generous) but i watched it again and now just taking it as a movie i would probably give it a 4.5

I had the same takeaways thematically. There’s a lot of criticism online about the writing in this movie (mostly small bits and pieces of dialogue, or the omission of iconic scenes in the original epic), but I do think Nolan deserves credit for refining the narrative to tell a story that resonates for 2026’s geopolitics.

I find that almost every Nolan movie gets better upon rewatch, except his batman trilogy, Interstellar and Tenet are probably the two biggest examples of improving upon rewatch for me

personally thought this was the best theme in the movie. I was surprised to find that it isn't in the original text

Glad you enjoyed it more on your second viewing! I’ve noticed A lot of the criticisms people have on their first viewing is what the odyssey “should have been” and not what the film was. Upon my second viewing I accepted that it was a film using the odyssey as a medium to tell a poignant story that’s arguably more relevant to our time than when it was written.

Agreed I think going in less focused on the mythos and more on the tragedy narrative makes it a great film

The Athena reveal being a literal representation of civilization. By sacking the city in such a way they have "killed" Athena and thus civilization. The tales literally spread of what they did as the Sea peoples.

Literally just walked out of my second watch and you’ve summarised perfectly how I felt about that last shot, the first shot of the horse in water to the last shot with the burning horse, it’s visual history repeating itself

That Zendaya scene was one of my best part in the movie, as seen in the end as you have described, I teared up at the Cinema.
Will watch it with my son here in London Bfi again, he finds it useful for his latin, he says he read the book in secondary school.
