Forgiveness and trust are two very different things. You can forgive someone and still find yourself reacting every time you see the phone, notice a change in behavior, or encounter something that reminds you of what happened.
And sometimes, that’s where people become frustrated with themselves. They think, “I said I forgave this, so, why am I still feeling this way?” But forgiveness doesn’t automatically restore what the betrayal disrupted. Trust, emotional safety, predictability, and your confidence in what you believe about the relationship may all have been affected too.
That’s why constantly checking can become about more than the phone. At some point, you may be trying to find reassurance that you’re safe from being blindsided again. And if reassurance only lasts until the next trigger, then the deeper issue probably isn’t being resolved by checking.
So, the question may not simply be, “Have I forgiven him?” It may be: What would actually have to be true in this relationship for me to no longer feel like I need to investigate it in order to feel secure?
That’s a much deeper conversation than forgiveness alone.
