Muslim sources never tell the whole truth. Eisenhower feared that the joint British, French, and Israeli invasion of Egypt would drive Arab states into an alliance with the Soviet Union. He wanted to avoid a superpower confrontation in the Middle East. Also, Eisenhower firmly believed that the principles of the United Nations charter required nations to withdraw from territories captured by military force. Faced with the threat of these severe sanctions, Israeli Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion ultimately agreed to pull Israeli forces out of Egyptian territory in March 1957, paving the way for the UN Emergency Force to be stationed as a buffer. These peacekeepers were removed by Nasser in 1967 which was one of the factors leading to the 1967 war. It is also important to state that leading up to the Suez Crises, Egypt had been funding Palestinian militias which attacked Israel from Egyptian territory and that Egypt blockaded the Straits of Tiran which was a breach of international law and an act of war.
