We just dropped Birdie off for surgery❤️‍🩹🕊️ I honestly don’t even know how to put into words what I’m feeling right now😳 It’s so hard to wrap my head around the fact that when we pick Birdie up… half of her body will be gone🤯 How does your brain even process something like that? It’s absolutely terrifying to think about, but at the same time I truly believe this is going to give her the freedom she’s been craving! Every time I picture her running around without dragging her little legs behind her, I can’t help but smile☺️ We’ve been asked so many questions about what her recovery is going to look like, and the truth is, we don’t know. This is our first time going through something like this! Of course, Birdie’s surgical team has prepared us and made it very clear how major this surgery is and how seriously we need to take her recovery. But I don’t think anything can truly prepare us for what it’ll be like… how long it might take before she takes her first steps, or even what those first steps will look like🥹 A few months ago, I never would’ve imagined we’d feel confident enough to take on a case like this. A double amputation felt so far beyond anything we could comprehend, let alone handle. But I guess everyone who has ever cared for dogs like Birdie had a first time too… and I have a feeling they were probably just as scared as we are right now! This morning, we were separated from Birdie for a few minutes and when she saw us again she absolutely exploded with excitement😅 The staff smiled and asked, “Does she do that every time?” We laughed and said, “Every single time.” Because she gets so excited to see us, the surgical team asked that we not visit her tonight. They don’t want her getting worked up and busting open her incisions, stitches, or staples🥲 As sad as I was to be told this, we are happy to do whatever is best for Birdie! They’ll be keeping her overnight (maybe 2) and the next time we see her will be when it’s time to bring her home! Please keep our sweet girl in your thoughts today💕🫶🏼 I’ll be sharing updates throughout the day as we receive them!! We can’t wait to see the life waiting for her on the other side of this🐾
