Most of their fandom would rather date them than listen to their music.

That’s part of why K-pop fans are so parasocial, they’re intentionally and carefully cultivating this type of audience

Cortis is a trained kpop group, idk what HYBE promised them, but they were trained to use that parasocial relationship and you can't convince me otherwise. There's multiple videos of Martin playing into the role of boyfriend to these girls, he makes it feel authentic because he's so funny and flirty. HYBE knew EXACTLY what kind of audience will Cortis bring and they were prepared for it. I think it's a great reality check for some kpop fans who think their artist is authentic :/

I somewhat feel bad for the girls in Katseye because they have ability to be creators but they’re not. Like they have talent but that talent is being used as a projector so it’s all stuff written for them, choreo made for them etc

thats why i felt really weird about iconic by mistake, its the company writing the lyrics for the girls, and making the girls say "the bag is nice though" etc, when its general knowledge how many idols dont even get payed until years into their career, and so on... and most of the criticism and "hate" they play up in the lyrics are in fact toward the companys decisions, but they are making these girls sing like "hahaha we dont even careee" when they are being mistreated...

The nature of kpop itself, never sells ONLY the music, they sell the BRAND, which includes the group/the idol, the performance, the merch, ect. They push on that parasocial relationship between idol & fans in order to market that brand

I’m 21 so around Katseyes age - a lot of people do act and dress the way they do but what’s ethically concerning is the way that is marketed downwards. It’s because of the decline of preteen culture. Back then teenage girlhood was commercialized for older children and young teens (eg disney channel and nickolodeon) but now preteems watch adult coded content. This is why you see Sephora kids and 12 yr olds watching Love Island. With Katseye, young adult culture, including concert/festival/rave culture, is now being sold to preteens and older children - whom are like way too young developmentally and emotionally to understand what these aesthetics mean beyond surface level.

i think this is also why i‘m losing interest in quite a few k pop groups, it's getting more and more consumerism focused and less focused on connection and music/performamce/art.

This is basically for all of K-Pop no? They’re called “idols” not singers or performers. You don’t even have to be particularly talented to be an idol so long as you have the right look they’ll put money behind you
