sort kinda related BUT this is why i hate when ppl constantly overshare or when content creators who make it their life mission to create intimacy with an audience because it’s like what’s left for you???? life is about simultaneously creating and discovering mysteries and if you’re constantly just telling ppl what’s up, the spark dies. i even have interests that i like that i don’t tell ppl because i want parts of myself to be reserved just for me and those who are REALLY curious

I like the analysis of Ernest becker on the taboo of sex and his greater theory of death anxiety is really accurate. TL;DR: humans are driven by the existential fear of the body’s mortality, they create culture and symbols to deny this nature. Sex is taboo because we are giving into a mortal and deeply corporeal experience, possibly the most corporeal experience we can access. He makes a note that this is why trust is important to sex but doesn’t really ever explore it much. Building on that I think the importance of eroticism is that it’s the affirmation of corporeality. through the other, whom you desire so greatly, you are able to love and idolize their mortal form and by doing so accept your own. Of course, only if you are able to accept the vulnerability of recognizing your own physicality and desire. I think for me eroticism is, at its heart, you and your partner(s) giving yourselves over to that desire in an absurd and almost Abrahamic trust of each other and by engaging so positively with the mirror of that desire you are temporarily free of death anxiety.

I wont have the level of articulation that you have over this subject, but to add my 2 cents, i know that the instant gratification that i had from pornography led to less of a need to seek a partner and dissolution of the relationships that i managed to get. It made erotic interactions more consumable and less magical, and its interesting how that same pattern can be seen in other areas of life

Why You Should Go Read :
You crammed so much in here. Awesome. The book Immediacy by Anna Kornbluh attempts to get at this but it was written in this obnoxious too clever by half style that I couldn’t finish it. Would you recommend the Han to a broader non-theory audience?

This is interesting bc I frequently engage in theological and philosophical discussions, and hardly anybody values getting little pieces of information to make you excited to dig deeper, search and come back for more. it seems this concept you’re discussing is manifesting across different spheres. They just want everything out on the table all at once - there’s no mystery or allure. I liken it to how we used to have to wait for TV shows to come on once a week. Humans thrive from limited access because it makes us yearn for more - and this is a big reason why celebrity culture is dead… we have too much access.
