Goldfish are a bad pick for a rain barrel because they get big, produce a lot of waste, and need more oxygen and cleaner water than a barrel can provide over time. They're also not great at eating mosquito larvae once they grow past a few inches. Better options: mosquitofish (gambusia) are small, hardy, and purpose-built larvae eaters that many county mosquito control programs give away free and will never stop eating mosquito larvae their whole lives

Copper when thrown in water will kill the bacteria and alge that the mosquitoes live/breed off of. You can use old pennys, a piece of old copper pipe, etc…

you might want to try Japanese rice fish! they stay small and can do the same job. you will have to bring them inside if you get bad winters though. you would have to with goldfish as well as long as the container can freeze, but at least with the rice fish they are much much smaller.

If you live in Los Angeles County you can get free mosquito fish for this purpose. They look like little guppies

These fish will grow into large goldfish… they really need at least movement like airation or filtration in the tank. We have a 10 yr old goldfish, so please get them a bigger pond they deserve to space to swim and they will get much bigger
