In May 1972, revolutionary leader Amílcar Cabral delivered one of the most striking speeches of the African liberation era during the funeral ceremonies of Kwame Nkrumah in Conakry, the capital of Guinea. Nkrumah, the founding President of Ghana and a leading architect of Pan-Africanism, had died on April 27, 1972 in Bucharest, Romania, after years in exile. He had lived in Conakry since the 1966 Ghanaian coup d'état, which overthrew him while he was on a diplomatic mission to Vietnam. In exile, Guinea’s president Ahmed Sékou Touré welcomed him as an honored guest and even named him honorary co-president of Guinea. Speaking before African liberation leaders gathered in Conakry, Cabral delivered a tribute that was also a warning. He rejected the idea that Nkrumah had simply died of illness, declaring instead that the real cause was “the cancer of betrayal.” For Cabral, the overthrow of Nkrumah symbolized a deeper struggle in Africa, the fight between genuine independence movements and the lingering influence of imperial power working through local collaborators. Cabral reminded the audience that in African thought the dead remain among the living. Nkrumah, he said, would rise again in the determination of those still fighting colonial rule across the continent, from Guinea-Bissau to Angola and Mozambique.
