i think its just factually incomplete. lots of successful movements of the past didnt think it’d happen til it did. how could you not fall into doomerism when its all you’ve known? but you didnt live through the vast changes that are positive for many lives across the world. the people lifted from poverty in china, how could they have predicted that as individuals? my grandparents in cuba, things are hard but how could they have predicted life without enslavement by united fruit company/chiquita? its just something to think about ig.

Doomerisim isn’t wrong it’s just a very fast pipeline to suicidal ideation because when you realize there’s a very high chance that your life will be terrible and painful, you’ll have nothing keeping you going except the fear of death as you know that it will *only* get worse. There is no argument against doomerisim it’s just wise to not be a doomer because of the mental fatui

Extra hard when you have family in third world countries as well. Its hard to accept that their lives likely won’t get better in my lifetime due to endless resource extraction and colonialism.

To paraphrase Antonio Gramsci, we must have pessimism of the intellect, but optimism is the will. It’s good to recognize the problems in society & how bad things are, but it’s very bad to convince yourself there’s nothing you can do to change it. The very belief that you can do nothing will make you do nothing.

We don't talk about how "Hope" leads to the same kind of paralysis as doomerism. It leads to bullshit green washing that just straight up lies about a solution. It also leads to people hoping that it's all gonna be fine and take care of itself. It convinces people to hope they don't have to take any risks. Like people need to be so fucking for real, the majority of the population aren't doomers and yet carbon output has steadily gone up every year. We are without question, already suffering from paralysis with hope. The truth is that most "hope" is just climate denialism and it's time for people to grow the fuck up because this hope shit is not fucking working for us.

My therapist has been trying to pull me out of doomerism. She doesn’t know yet this is our last week together. This stuff is literally what I got my degree in and I am sick of people trying to tell me I’m the one using cognitive pitfalls like predicting the future. We knew this was going to happen decades ago and we’ve done the opposite of the plan that was laid out for us to try to mitigate it… I’m not making predictions with a crystal ball, I have primary sources and textbooks ???

there is a mark fisher lecture where he says something to the effect of "the only way to change the future is to think of the present as the apocalypse. only that mindset gives you the motivation to fight for radical change"

A thing's true or it isn't, the ecosystem is fucked and it doesn't really matter how anybody wants to feel about that. Be an optimist if it gets you through the day, whatever, but realize that's a choice you're making and that it's not really fair to get mad at people who choose to live a little closer to reality.

I actually believe that the only path to the immediate change that needs to happen is on the other side of doomerism. The only way out is through.

ok, fine, acknowledging the potential negative effects of doomerism leading to a sense of futility or whatever but like, what about the negative effects of toxic positivity, downplaying the severity of the crisis, glossing over how little time we have left (if we haven't already run out of time), etc leaving people in a state of complacency?

I feel very similarly, and as someone that's lived 20 years longer than you, I'm sorry to say I haven't had much of progress in my mindset. really, I feel so much more strongly set in it. you are an incredibly intelligent, thoughtful, and strong person, and I have no advice to give that your aren't already doing. personally, I find ways to take action in my local and global communities. feeding ppl, harm reduction, and trying my best to spend money outside of most corporations. It's exhausting, but the only way I can live life on my personal moral grounding. Wishing you peace in your knowledge/learning, and a strong body/mind to continue fighting.

As a polsci major, it actually gets worse the more you learn about the history of politics and how systems function today. You kinda learned that nothing has ever changed, so it makes me hopeless that anything will change in the future

I mean, IMO the main reason is the paralysis. From a sociological-climate science perspective, bc that’s where my knowledge is, there are many and arguably easy things we could be doing right now to lower emissions and water use. The US people’s general apathy toward climate, resulting in doomerism, is manufactured, assisted by the US’ ability to protect its population. We feel comfortable saying “the planet’s fucked, whatever” because we don’t face the full brunt of climate change, but there will be a point where collectively the US cannot maintain this farce a climate stability. If the general public knew what these fossil fuels and agriculture companies are doing, and how they could fix a lot of shit but don’t simply because it costs money, they would demand those actions of those companies. It is beneficial to them to keep us paralyzed and believing nothing can be done.

tbh if you aren't at least kind of a doomer you're probably insane and I don't trust you. I think it ultimately comes down to not letting the doomerism win more than it does never letting yourself feel that way.

this concept is what made me not vote for kamala. im sitting there, watching her play niciety games in a world about to explode, and my inner thought was "yeah. the pain and suffering has to massssssively increase, or people are gonna prioritize football straight through extinction." and violá. you have the largest mass awakening in human history. the villians are nessecary to remind the flock there are worse things than simply dying one day.

Don't know if this is helpful for anyone else, but my wife has a VERY long view of history, and when I'm feeling doomer she tells me about the climate catastrophes and extinction events human beings have survived in our prehistoric past, which helps me put my fears in perspective.

There was a point in time I was the "ultimate doomerist", an Anarcho Nihilist. An ideology that is based in anarchism, but at the end of the day believes that society is going to collapse or the ecosystem will fail before we ever get to a revolution, and that our response to that should be pure rage and defiance of all systems we reject. Although I do not identify that way anymore, bc believing that everything is fucked and reading political theory that echoes that statement was killing my mental health, there is always a little part of me that still sees and understands where that viewpoint comes from, bc one of the main focuses of theory regarding the ideology was the idea that we spend too much time planning for a future we dont even know will exist, always looking towards the next election cycle, the next year, etc. while atrocities continue to happen everyday and worsen, and everyday we aren't throwing ourselves unto the anvil of war is another day that the tight grip of everything we fight against gets stronger. IG the thing keeping me from going back to that ideology is the knowledge that hope is not the absence of hopelessness just like bravery is not the absence of fear. The truth is there will always be someone fighting, and as long as someone is always fighting, we always have a chance to win. "Nothing to lose but your chains, we have a world to win".

I feel the exact same way. Like cognitively I understand why doomerism is bad, but we’re heading for a climate crisis and everything in the past decades has been building up to prepare everyone politically, socially, definitely technologically and maybe even psychologically for a lot of genocide. And ecocide too. Everyone wants to tell us to quit it, but they won’t even see the walls closing in on us. It feels like that saying that it’s going to happen slowly then all at once. :(

I agree. the wild xenophobia and current ICE camps are just setting the stage for the upcoming climate refugee crisis. it's gonna be a horrorshow. I don't think there's any answer other than: we can't actually know the future. capitalism is in crisis, and when it actually breaks, the logic of what is possible changes. (this is why i love the DSA putting up socialists in highly visible positions.) this isn't accelerationism, it's just recognizing that we're accelerating. China is a rational actor, at least
