I think most people stand in that queue just to secure space for their carry-on luggage. Unfortunately, every time I wait until the end because I don’t want to stand in line, I find that other passengers have already placed their bags in the overhead bin above my seat.

Different point of view: I don't disagree with you, but if I am about to sit for 4 hours straight, standing up for 15 minutes or so before makes me feel better about it to get my blood flowing in my legs.

seriously why do you care? you don't get a medal for sitting..most gates don't have enough seats for everyone to sit..and also if everyone sat until the last minute, you'd never take off
