Love had stopped asking what day it was. For weeks, the days had been measured by other things instead. Morning medication. Blood tests. The quiet shuffle of nurses entering her room before sunrise. Milk arriving with coffee she usually forgot to drink because she was too busy telling her everything she'd missed. Some days were good. On those days, Love could sit up without help. She could eat something. She could laugh without immediately becoming exhausted. On bad days, even talking took too much energy. Today was somewhere in between. Love lay propped against a mountain of pillows, watching the early afternoon sunlight creep slowly across the hospital floor. Her body felt heavy, but her mind was clear. Milk sat beside her, one hand wrapped around Love's. “You need to go.” Milk looked up from her phone. “Excuse me?” “You've not moved from that chair in hours.” “And?” “And you smell.” Milk's mouth fell open. Love managed a small smile. “You've been wearing that shirt since yesterday.” “I went home last night.” “For three hours.” “Four.” “Three and a half.” Milk narrowed her eyes. “You're very mouthy for someone who's supposed to be resting.” Love's smile grew and Milk leaned forward and kissed her. The smile remained until Milk sat back. “I understand why you want to be with me today, but its okay, I’ll be fine.” Milk gave her a small, pained smile as Love’s eyes drifted towards the bedside table. A wedding magazine was sitting beneath a pile of cards. Neither of them had moved it. Neither wanted to. Today was supposed to be their wedding day. They'd chosen everything together. Love's dress was hanging in her mother's house. Milk's suit was ready. The rings were waiting in a little velvet box. For months, when treatment became unbearable, the wedding had been the thing ahead of them. Just get through this. Then we'll get married. Then we'll go away. Then we'll start living again. Except the doctors had spoken to them three weeks ago. Love wasn't leaving the hospital and the wedding had been cancelled that evening. Milk had made the calls and Love had listened from the bed while Milk stood in the corridor telling their friends and family that there wouldn't be a wedding anymore. She hadn't cried while making the calls. Milk always waited until she thought Love was asleep to cry and Love always pretended she didn't hear. “Hey.” Love looked at her. Milk was watching her. “What?” “Where did you go?” Love squeezed her hand weakly. “Nowhere.” Milk followed her gaze towards the magazine and her expression changed. “Love…” “It's okay.” “It isn't.” “It has to be.” Milk looked down at their joined hands as Love rubbed her thumb against Milk's fingers. “You would've looked beautiful.” Love gave a small, broken laugh. “You haven't even seen the dress.”

Love sighed. “Don't.” “I'm not doing anything.” “Your face is.” “My face can't help it.” Love smiled and Milk lifted her hand and kissed her knuckles. “I love you.” “I love you too. I would have loved to marry you.” Love whispered as she closed her eyes. She was tired again. Milk remained beside her until her breathing settled. Only then did she carefully pull her hand away. . When Love woke, the room was dark. For a moment, she thought she'd slept through the entire evening. Then she noticed the lights. Tiny warm fairy lights had been hung around the window. Love blinked and turned her head. Flowers covered the bedside table. White roses…her flowers. The ones she'd chosen for the wedding. “What…” She tried to sit up as the door opened. Her main nurse P'Nan appeared. “You're awake.” She smiled. “What's happening?” Nan walked towards her carrying a familiar garment bag. “No...” Nan's smile widened. “Oh yes.” Love's eyes filled. “Where's Milk?” “Busy.” “Busy doing what?” “Don’t you worry.” Love laughed through her tears as Nan opened the bag to reveal her wedding dress.
