I know how rewarding it can be and how tragic it can be as well. Always go with your gut feeling, never animal control or Vet Tech's. So, I socialize psycho attack adult cats. You're doing exactly right. You gotta handle them and stroke their butt and tail. Got him in a small cage for control. within a week his light switch will flip and suddenly he'll come to the door and start purring for your touch. Two problems. He'll be obnoxiously affectionate, but only to you. Someone else will also need to put their hands on him now. Bless you.
