I have a physics degree from a major research university in California. My professors were world class physicists. They had TV shows and one hosted an IMAX movie. Everyone one of them went by there first name. None of them expected to be called doctor

Why why why do we call them doctor. They’re not medical doctors. A Masters degree is also beyond bachelors and there’s no special vanity name for that.

There is a real issue with gender in the academy - male professors who don’t need to earn respect with titles because they look the part and women professors who must use Dr. so they aren’t called miss. It’s not the discipline of the Ph.D. Students don’t really understand the differences

People like Jill Biden should be referred to as Dr in relation to their job. If I ask “who is your professor “ then Dr Biden is appropriate. If I ask who is the First Lady? Then Jill Biden is correct.
