From Policeman to Theater King: Meet Hubert Ogunde, the Father of Nigerian Movies Chief Hubert Adedeji Ogunde is widely known as the father of Nigerian theater. He was born on July 10, 1916, in Ososa, Ogun State. Before he became a famous entertainer, he worked as a schoolteacher and later as a police officer. However, his deep love for traditional African music, dance, and storytelling made him leave the police force. In 1944, he started Nigeria’s very first professional acting group. Before Ogunde, most plays in Nigeria were quiet performances held only in churches. He completely changed this by bringing theater directly to the public. He started a "traveling theater," where his group packed up their gear and traveled from town to town to perform. They mixed lively Yoruba drumming, dancing, and colorful costumes with exciting stories. This energetic style made live acting popular all over the country. Ogunde was also a very brave man who used his plays to fight for social justice. During the time when the British ruled Nigeria, he wrote powerful plays to protest against foreign control. Because his stories criticized the government, he was arrested several times, and some of his plays were banned. Instead of stopping him, these challenges made him a hero to the Nigerian people. To keep his theater group running smoothly on long road trips, Ogunde created a unique family business. He married many of his lead actresses, and his wives and children made up most of his acting team. This clever plan kept his cast close, made travel much cheaper, and allowed the group to tour together for decades without breaking up. Later in life, Ogunde successfully turned his popular stage plays into early Yoruba films like Aiye and Jaiyesimi. Before he passed away on April 4, 1990, he also helped start the National Troupe of Nigeria. Today, he is remembered as a true legend, and a museum dedicated to his life in his hometown of Ososa continues to inspire filmmakers today. #fypシ #everyonefollowers ..
