The Gospels tell us that Jesus freed her from seven demons, after which she joined the women who accompanied him and supported his ministry from their own resources. Unlike many disciples who fled, Mary remained near Jesus during the Crucifixion. She witnessed his burial and returned to the tomb early on the first day of the week. There she encountered the risen Christ, who entrusted her with announcing the news to the other disciples. For this reason, Christian tradition calls her “the Apostle to the Apostles.” In 2016, Pope Francis elevated her celebration to a feast, placing greater emphasis on her unique role as a witness to the Resurrection.
