this depiction of helen is so dear to me. many people claim misogyny, but i saw it as ideation. helen is full of anger in the film, rightfully so, the people she loves has been hurt most. helen apologizing to penelope wasn’t her taking accountability for the actions of men—especially when she hasn’t apologized to anyone else from what we were shown—it was her hoping penelope didn’t associate her with those atrocities, and if she did, that she would extend warmth and forgiveness. she apologized for “what they did in my name,” not for “what i did”. helen apologizes to one person, and her apology is for her existence and loss of autonomy. and it’s not like ancient greece was known for their feminism in the first place.
